POTALA PALACE

Formerly the palace of the Dalai Lamas, the Potala Palace is now a heavily guarded museum of sorts. Chinese guards keep a strict eye on the hundred or so monks who are able to stay in the home of "their lama" and look after its upkeep. The monks, many of whom are the brightest and most devout, must wear janitor uniforms (robes are forbidden), and can only say their prayers once or twice a month. It was a very sad feeling walking through the dormant halls of such a majestic palace.
